A Question for Reconstructionist Norse Heathens

If historical authenticity matters so much, why imitate the fantasy Viking instead of the historical one?

The stereotype says Vikings were angry, rude, hyper-individualistic people who “didn’t give a f**k.”

But Norse Heathen society placed enormous importance on hospitality, frith, honor, loyalty, reciprocity, reputation, and social bonds.

The fantasy Viking says:

“I answer to nobody.”

The historical Heathen understood:

“How I treat others determines my honor and my place within the web of community.”

So which one are you reconstructing?

The Viking of modern fantasy, or the Heathen values actually reflected in the historical sources?
